Forum Info November 2006

On September 25th, 2006 the Federal Government announced new spending cuts worth $1 billion. Some six weeks later, organizations are now getting a truer measure of the impact of this decision. The cutbacks have affected programs such as the Court Challenges Program, the Law Commission of Canada, Status of Women Canada, Adult Learning and Literacy Programs, Youth Employment Programs, the Museum Assistance Program, First Nations Programs, and the Canadian Volunteerism Initiative. It is estimated that about $200 million of the $1 billion in cutbacks will directly or indirectly impact volunteer organizations in Canada.

For the full release please refer to the following link:
http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/media/nr-cp/2006/0925_e.asp

The Voluntary Sector Forum, while undergoing a transition to a different and more inclusive structure, is now collecting factual information on the impact of these cutbacks so that it can assess what they mean to the sector as a whole.

To begin this collection process we have put together a series of questions available through our website. If your organization or your particular sector has been affected, it would be very much appreciated if you could take a few minutes to fill out the survey.

For more information and for a copy of the survey please view our newsletter at: http://www.vsf-fsbc.ca/eng/newsletters/2006/foruminfo_nov06.cfm

We thank you for your time and attention to this matter. If you have any questions please contact us.

CCPA launches new Growing Gap project
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives launched its new Growing Gap project yesterday.

Over the next year, the CCPA will release a series of reports drawing on experts from every corner of the country - experts who will examine every facet of income inequality in Canada.

CCPA Research Associate Armine Yalnizyan, who broke the story of Canada's growing gap in 1998, joins CCPA Research Associate Hugh Mackenzie and project Director Trish Hennessy as part of the Growing Gap project team based in Toronto.

This month, the team releases findings from a national poll conducted by Environics Research for the CCPA.

Canadians have a burgeoning sense that the nation's gap between rich and poor is growing. In the coming months, our broader team of experts across Canada will open the vault on the 'what' and 'why' of the growing gap.

Our experts will examine how big the gap is. They will look at how Canadian families are faring. They will examine the changing nature of Canada's middle class. They will focus on growing wealth. They will consider who is gaining most from Canada's economic prosperity - and who is being left behind.

We believe public concerns about Canada's growing gap have been lying below the political radar screen for far too long.

Visit www.GrowingGap.ca now, visit often. And tell your friends.
